Last weekend I spent in Hahei, Coromandel. On Sunday morning I decided to come to the car park at the beginning of Cathedral Cove track and shoot sunrise. I was marking time below the deck and had taken nothing special. All shots were very ordinal, like that.
When I climbed upstairs I was very surprised with the “Danger” tape and the “Tsunami Warning” sign. My first thought was “Ah! It’s a joke! Good joke! What a tsunami here, at very calm Hahei bay?”
However no one was brave enough to ignore that “joke”. Minutes later someone else came and talk about the earthquake in Chile and tsunami warning for the whole Pacific.
People were coming to the car park, shooting the sign…
… and waiting for either tsunami show or canceling the alert to walk to Cathedral Cove.
It was so strange to see the beach at Cathedral Cove…
and Hahei beach itself free of people. There was beautiful Sunday sunny morning. Usually at 10 am both places are overcrowded already. But this morning was different for everyone.
I was there and was ready for tsunami show as well I was on the hill. My family and friends were on fourth line of houses off the beach and Civil Defence told about a wave up to 2 meters. So I wasn’t concerning about my family and friends and myself. I was looking forward to shooting for a tsunami Unfortunately at about 10:30 am it became clear that we will see almost nothing. It was like high tide in Gisborne. And it was a time to go home. So I return to our rented house handed over it to the manager and we sprinted to Waterworks Garden
